Located in the northeast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guilin is
considered one of the most beautiful cultural cities with a long history in China. With an
elevation of 150 metres, the city has a total area of 2,000 square kilometers and a
population of 685,000 people.
Guilin, standing in the middle of a karst region, features a typical karst landscape.
Characteristics of Guilin scenery are its oddly-shaped solitary hills rising out of flat
ground, transparent waters winding through the region, intricate caves in various shapes
and exquisite stones. Hence the popular saying -the mountains and water of Guilin are the
finest under heaven-.
The Lijiang River, the main river in this area, winds through the rising and falling hills
and peaks like a colored silk ribbon. A cruise on the river brings visitors in touch with
the unique scenery around Guilin, which is considered to be a fine art gallery as natural
scenic wonders unfold on both banks of the river.
SCENIC PLACES OF INTEREST
- REED FLUTE CAVE/LUDI YAN: Located in Guangming Mountain in northwest
Guilin, Reed Flute Cave named for the kind of reed growing near the cave, which make fine
flutes. The huge limestone karst cave zigzags 500 metres deep inside, stalactites in
dazzling shapes and colors show why the cave has a reputation of being a -palace of
natural art-.

ELEPHANT
TRUNK HILL/XIANGBI SHAN: Sitting on the joint of Yangjiang River and
Lijang River, it bears close resemblance to an elephant with its trunk in the river and
has long been considered the symbol of Guilin.

SEVEN
STAR CAVE/QIXINGYAN: Located in the west slope of Mount Putuo in Guilin,
the cave, zigzagging about one kilometer deep, houses more than 40 sites. A gallery of
stalactites, stalagmites, huge stone slabs and pillars, the cave has a reputation of being
the -cave
residence of the immortals-.

FOLDED BROCADE HILL/DIECAI SHAN:
Standing in north Guilin, also known as Mount Gui or Mount Fengdong, it is composed of
Mount Yue, Mount Siwang, the Red-Crowned Crane Peak -Xianhe Feng- and the Bright Moon Peak
-Mingyue Feng-. The rocks of the hill are mysteriously formed, hence the name of Folded
Brocade Hill. First opened during the Tang Dynasty, the hill offers a number of scenic
attractions.

THE LIJIANG
RIVER: Rising from Cat Mountain in Xing'an county to the northeast of
Guilin, and winding its way through Guilin and Yangshuo, the Lijiang River is the main
part of Guilin scenery. A 40-kilometer-long boat ride between Guilin and Yangshuo brings
tourists in touch with the unique scenery around Guilin, and introduces them to the
age-old tradition of fishing with cormorants.

UNDERGROUND
WATER HILL -FUBO SHAN-: Standing in northeast Guilin, facing down the
